I watched the tide nip at the sand
The waves swashed and ebbed
moving forward in grand, crashing thrusts
then pulled violently back
again and again
A rhythmic pattern; an aggressive lullaby
Each pull stealing pieces of the sand
intertwining
molecules floating into the vastness
Further out the water is steady, clear
tinted by the blue of the summer sky
shimmering like scattered glass under the unrelenting sun
The illusion of calmness fades as the water nears the shore
tranquil aquas morphing into smashing, raging white caps
barreling urgently forward
I step back
desperately searching for where the calm
meets the chaos
where the gentle deep of the sea
connects with the urgency of the shallows
But, the serene and the restless work together in tandem
an unlikely team
As one wave breaks, another appears
pummeling the sand
each determined to make it to shore
even as the entire ocean tries its best to
pull them back
