Out of all of the Olympic sports my favorite to watch has always been Women's Gymnastics. I never participated in the sport. Well, my mother did force me to attend classes when I was four years old but I spent the sessions on my teachers hip, terrified. So, I wouldn't say I was ever involved in the sport myself.
But, I've always been fascinated watching. The way their bodies contort in the air. The way their brain knows how to send signals to each muscle as they fly creating art in the air. The way they trust themselves. They have faith in their mind-body connection. They know their body will catch them as they plummet back to the ground. The pure grit and strength that it takes to get to that level - the hours of training, injuries- true blood, sweat and tears. It's a sport about pushing yourself and your body to it's limits.
These gymnasts are constantly pushing the envelope of what is humanly possibly. And each year, another proves that what we all thought was a limit, is actually a goal. They defy human reasoning. They withstand human doubt. They create seemingly impossible objectives and then they achieve them, soar above them.
It's a sport that gives me hope. If these women can quite literally train themselves into defying gravity than I can certainly get up every day to work towards my own goals.
Nothing is impossible. It may be hard, painful, time consuming...you may need to sacrifice and sometimes you're going to end up face down on the mat. But, you can get there. You can do the things they said you couldn't do. You too, can fly.
