Drowning in “what ifs”

Sometimes I drown in "what ifs"
they crash over me
pummeling like waves
leaving me heaving for air
salt stinging open wounds
Sometimes, I let them
pull me out
into the riptide
drag me to the past
float there awhile
a sea of different endings
all leading to a loss of air
all resulting in me
gasping on the ocean floor
